When you are a new model you may want to get a portfolio together - generally an agency will help you get this together, but if you are out of luck you may want to find a local photographer witha studio to help you.  I'd say you should always get a basic head shot and a basic body shot.  You should have some creative pieces in there to but if you are paying a basic rate you may not get anything too comprehensive - another tip is to approach photography students.  They are usually free, are very creative and easy and flexible to work with and need reliable models!

Great advice as always, Rowena! Photography students are literally hungry to find models, especially ones with different looks and styles. They are ideal for doing TFP/TFCD shoots with, too, if you're not able to spend any money to pay a professional photographer with a studio.

I agree! When I was learning about photography I did a lot of actors portfolios it was great fun!  And I didnt charge of course and they just wanted a few head shots in return.  As a student you also have free use of the studios!

Actually, if any new models want to, they can get hired freelance to work as an art model, working with photography students/classes. Art models get paid pretty well, especially if the school is reputable so you'd not only get to do multiple photoshoots with new photographers, but you'd be able to make side income. I worked as an art model for about 3 years and the photography classes were always the most fun because I usually had to work with a group of photographers who all got a certain amount of time to shoot me, so I was in and out of outfits and the different ideas the students come up with where always a fun challenge for me. It could be something worth looking into.

True - it can take some real investgating (theres less o this kind of thing in the UK) but it is so worth looking into especially if you live in the big cities.
