So I know that photographers, like models, can get signed to agencies. I just wanted to know a little bit more about this topic out of interest. How does the process work? Is it the same as when a model seeks agency representation? Do photography agencies taken on any kind of photographer or do they have specific divisions (fashion, commercial, editorial, etc). Are there open calls? I would think that since a photographer's images showcase their talent, you need to have a solid portfolio to showcase...?

If any of you Modelfolio photographers out there have an agent, I would be interested in hearing about your experience. =)

    Hi Dania

I briefly signed up to an agency. It was good but London based and I didn't really enjoy the restrictions. I prefer being freelance like a lot of photographers I think - its more freedom.  It is similar to a model getting an agent - u visit the agencies with yur book and they normally will specialize.  Unlike with modelling being a freelance photographer is fairly easy and you don't necessarily need representation - you could selll shots on a library for example rather than getting an agency involved.

Oh and yes - you need an AMAZING portfolio usually to be picked.

Oh, wow, I had no idea that agencies were restrictive in representing their photographers! Do photography agencies also offer non exclusive and exclusive contracts? Being restricted as a model is one thing, but I can't imagine having an agency tell their photographers what they can or can't shoot or what gig to take and not take. That definitely doesn't agree with the free spirited nature of most photographers. I can see now why you didn't stick to having agency representation. I guess no one is able to promote yourself like you!

    Hey Dania

I believe some agencies to offer non exclusive and exclusive contracts.  I suppose you can hand over all the contracts and promotion to an agency and no to have to deal with money - I think a lot of creative people hate talking money and prefer to let a business person deal with it.
